LABEL MATERIALS
Papers
A traditional and economical choice, paper substrates are suitable for a wide range of applications across a wide range of industries but work best for products that do not come in contact with liquids, water, or excessive humidity. We carry both a White and Silver machine-coated high-performance papers with permanent acrylic adhesive. This high tack adheres to a variety of substrates, especially carton-board and surfaces such as polyethylene. Suitable for various printing methods including thermal
transfer finishes, flexo, and digital printing.
Estate (Wine) Papers
A premium paper option our estate paper selections range in textures and white hues and offer a hot melt rubber-based permanent high tack adhesive for general purpose. This adhesive isspecially designed for rough and curved surfaces and is suitable for Flexo and Digital printing. Commonly used in the Wine and Spirits industry these substrates elevate the appearance of any product, especially when paired with Hot or Cold Stamping that adorns it with Gold, Silver, or other metallic colors and effects such as embossing.
Plastic
Biaxially Oriented Polypropylene (BOPP) substrates can be white, silver, holographic or clear. Providing excellent moisture and chemical resistance these materials are excellent for refrigerated products which come in contact with moisture or which contain liquids, oils, creams, and/or chemicals. Polypropylene materials are also highly flexible and make an excellent choice for containers with small diameters. An alternative to BOPP is Polyethelyne which is most commonly used and the best option for squeezable tubes. Polyethylene is available in clear, white, or silver.
Tamper Evident
Tamper evident specialty substrates prevent or disclose tampering with your label. We carry two specialty materials; Anti-Counterfeit and Eggshell. Anti-counterfeit labels leave a behind a distinct “VOID” pattern when peeled by way of an ultra-aggressive adhesive. This label is
effective for use on merchandise that is subject to warranty or tampering. Eggshell material is ideal for labels that shouldn’t be removed due to security or regulatory reasons. Any attempts to remove the label will cause it to fracture
like an “eggshell”, making the removal of the label almost impossible.
Thermal Papers
Thermal substrates and thermal finishes allow for the printing of variable information onto the label by way of either wax, resin, or wax+resin ribbon thermal printers or by way of direct thermal printers which work by administering heat over the material. Thermal transfe roptions are helpful when adding additional information to your labels, such as barcodes, expiration dates, use-by dates, pricing, or other variable information. The thermal application machine and/or ribbon will determine the
best thermal substrate and finish.
Spot UV and Raised Varnish
Spot UV is a special varnish technique that can be applied to the desired areas of a label design as a decorative effect. The words “selective” or “spot” are used to describe this varnish technique because it can highlight certain features of a design by adding a glossy contrast to those selected areas, typically applied over a matte background to create the desired contrast. Raised Varnish is similar but with an additional tactile “raised” element. Both techniques require a plate
to drive the desired effect for each unique design.
Hot and Cold Stamping
Hot and cold stamping are used to add colored, textured, or metallic foil elements to a label. “Hot and “cold” stamping differ primarially in how they are applied to the label. Hot stamps require a tooled plate to stamp over
the desired foiled area via heat and pressure.
Cold stamping by contrast uses ultraviolet light during inline printing and can have CMYK inks printed over the stamp allowing for a wider array of colors while hot stamping is limited to existing foils. Both of these
techniques can be used on a variety of substrates.
Embossing
Embossing techniques can embelish paper labels by adding dimension and texture to a flat surface. Designs can be tooled onto a plate and with high pressure embedded onto the surface of a paper substrate keeping the shape and appearance of this design in a raised fashion. Often this technique is used with Estate Papers and can be found frequently on bottles of wine. Estate papers are most compatible with this technique as their thickness and sturdiness retain the shape of the embossed design more effectively than other substrates.
Finishes and Laminations
All of our standard print jobs come with an additional coating of UV finish with the option of glossy or matte to help protect them from sunlight and moisture. Glossy finishes are a shiny addition that can brighten colors while matte finishes create a more subtle and diffuse effect to both the texture and colors. For futher protection, plastic laminaion is available for most of our label materials (exceptions for shrink sleeves and clear on clear). Laminations also come in both matte and gloss
options.
Adhesives
Our standard label substrates come with acrylic adhesives that have high tack and provide ideal adhesion to plastic, paper, or glass materials. A few things you may want to consider are how the roughness and shape of your surface materials can impact the ability of your label to adhere to your packaging. If your label requires stronger or weaker adhesion please let us know so we can find the best option for your label, as we have additional adhesives that offer stronger or weaker
adhesion.
